Tomb Raider: Crofting a New Legacy

Amazon has just greenlit a new Tomb Raider TV series, which will be written and produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the star and writer of Fleabag. You might also remember her from last year’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Similar to Amazon’s Fallout series, this new Tomb Raider show will debut exclusively on Prime Video, reaching audiences in over 240 countries and territories.

This new series is part of a larger collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Tomb Raider reboot developer Crystal Dynamics. Crystal Dynamics is currently developing a new Tomb Raider game using Unreal Engine 5. Back in December 2022, Amazon Games announced they would be publishing this game, describing it as a “single-player, narrative-driven adventure that will add a new chapter to Lara Croft’s story.”

Amazon Games VP Christoph Hartmann expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “With great IP, the possibilities are endless. The richness and depth of the fiction allow the Tomb Raider series on Prime Video and the video game from Amazon Games to tell separate stories about Lara Croft’s adventures. We’re honored that Crystal Dynamics has entrusted Amazon with this iconic franchise, and we’re looking forward to seeing where this collaboration takes us.”

But wait, there’s more! Netflix is also working on an animated series called Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, featuring Hayley Atwell. This series, set to premiere later this year, takes place after the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and continues within the continuity of Crystal Dynamics’ reboot trilogy.

The Tomb Raider franchise has a rich history in both video games and movies. It all started with the original Tomb Raider game in 1996, introducing the iconic archaeologist Lara Croft. This led to numerous sequels and spin-offs, with the critically acclaimed reboot trilogy developed by Crystal Dynamics: Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018).

On the big screen, Angelina Jolie brought Lara Croft to life in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003). In 2018, Alicia Vikander starred in a reboot film titled Tomb Raider, which aimed to align more closely with the recent video games.

For fans looking to dive into Crystal Dynamics’ recent Tomb Raider reboot, Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition is available for free on PC via GOG for Amazon Prime members throughout May. For more insights, check out Game Informer’s review of the most recent game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

  1. I like the fact that the Tomb Raider franchise is getting the necessary attention from both Amazon and Netflix. As a fan, I can’t wait to witness everything that they have in stock for the players.

  2. I really love just how much Tomb Raider content we’re starting to get again. I figured the remasters of the first three games would give life to the franchise again, and surely it most definitely has! I’ll definitely be checking out this series whenever it drops. Crazy to think both Netflix and Amazon are on board to making a Tomb Raider series! I think I might be more interested in the animated series, but I’m looking forward to Amazon’s project as well.

  3. This new era of Tomb Raider has really done a lot to humanize Lara, giving her a more relatable and complex personality. They did all this while still retaining the core elements that made her such an iconic character in the first place. The result, as is obvious, is such a success. Seems I will add it to my list of “to be played” games.
