BAFTA has unveiled the outcome of its players’ poll aimed at determining the Most Iconic Video Games Character of All Time. This momentous occasion, launched in honour of the 20th BAFTA Games Awards on Thursday 11 April, witnessed the enthusiastic participation of over 4,000 players from diverse corners of the globe.

Securing the coveted number one spot is none other than Lara Croft, the indomitable heroine of the Tomb Raider franchise. Debuting in 1996, Lara has transcended generations, captivating hearts and minds across various mediums, from television and film to immersive live experiences. Her enduring legacy is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of a strong, adventurous spirit.

Following closely in second place is Mario, the beloved face of Nintendo and a veritable legend in the realm of video games. Conceived by the visionary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario’s journey from humble beginnings to global icon status is a testament to the enduring magic of gaming.

Rounding out the top three is Agent 47 from the Hitman series, a shadowy figure who has left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape since his debut in 2000. With his enigmatic persona and lethal skills, Agent 47 has become a symbol of intrigue and suspense, captivating gamers worldwide.

The list goes on to showcase a diverse array of characters, each with their own unique stories and legacies. From the lightning-fast Sonic the Hedgehog to the customizable charm of Sackboy, these characters have become more than mere avatars; they are beacons of imagination and creativity, inspiring players to embark on epic adventures and forge unforgettable memories.

As we celebrate these iconic characters, it’s essential to recognize the talented individuals who brought them to life. From performers like Shelley Blond, the original voice of Lara Croft, to visionary designers like Shigeru Miyamoto, whose creative genius birthed Mario, each contribution has left an indelible mark on gaming history.

Looking ahead, the future of gaming is brimming with possibilities, promising new adventures and characters yet to be discovered. As we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in gaming history, let us take a moment to celebrate the characters who have shaped our past and inspired our imaginations for generations to come.

  1. I think Sonic should have at least been number 3, though he was number 4 on their list. I think he’s a heck of a lot more iconic than Agent 47, he shouldn’t even be in the top 10 IMO. I watched Youtuber Madlittlepixel’s video on this and he wasn’t happy with the overall results of the poll. He’s not a fan of Tomb Raider however, which is one of the reasons why he wasn’t too happy with the results. It doesn’t surprise me that Lara Croft is number one on the list, she’s definitely quite iconic. Heck when the games first came out in the 90’s she was everywhere! I’m a bit mixed on the results myself, but a lot of the voting was done by fans and they most likely started to vote for their favorite current game characters which don’t really count IMO as iconic.

  2. Nintendo’s iconic plumber Mario, known for his red cap and overalls, is certainly one of the greatest video game characters of all time. Lara Croft, the adventurous archaeologist from the “Tomb Raider” is another great game character, annd the third one is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog.
